{"id":126,"date":"2009-05-15T19:52:41","date_gmt":"2009-05-16T02:52:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lavendrome.net\/blog\/?p=126"},"modified":"2009-05-31T08:42:31","modified_gmt":"2009-05-31T15:42:31","slug":"pattern-repitition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lavendrome.net\/blog\/?p=126","title":{"rendered":"Pattern Repetition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China likes its patterns.\u00a0 China likes repeating those patterns.\u00a0 Often this makes for some pleasing landscaping and architecture.\u00a0 It also makes for some disappointing touring.\u00a0 Here are two examples.<\/p>\n<p>Suzhou Street in the Summer Palace.\u00a0 A replication of a canal city, this tourist trap (one entrance, one exit, one way walking) had 5 stores repeated 6 times.\u00a0 The restaurants had the exact same menus.\u00a0 I mean that the menu cover, pages, and items were identical, not that just the food they served was similar.\u00a0 Benjie and I did eat at one, by the way, as it was the only source of non-packaged food in the park that we were able to locate.<\/p>\n<p>Dong&#8217;anmen Night Market (\u4e1c\u5b89\u95e8\u591c\u5e02).\u00a0 A street that the guide book depicted as having much promise: &#8220;&#8230;the red-canopied stalls here offer xiao chi &#8211; litterally, &#8220;little eats&#8221; &#8211; from all over China.&#8221;\u00a0 Either all of China eats salty noodles, wontons, xiao shu bao, and various meats on a stick, or the selection was the same 4 stalls repeated 4 times.\u00a0 I suspect the latter.<\/p>\n<p>If it seems I&#8217;m a little grumpy, its because I didn&#8217;t get much to eat last night&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China likes its patterns.\u00a0 China likes repeating those patterns.\u00a0 Often this makes for some pleasing landscaping and architecture.\u00a0 It also makes for some disappointing touring.\u00a0 Here are two examples.
